Lessons from the Avante-Garde:
“Let us quite simply live in our times” - Gerard Sandoz, Bijoux d’aujourd’hui
In the late 1920s, influenced by their collaborations with architects like Le Corbusier and artists like Braque and Miro, French jewelry designers Jean Fouquet, Raymond Templier, Gerard Sandoz and Jean Despres brought an entirely new and rigorously modern aesthetic to this most traditional of arts. Working not only in gold and diamonds but also in steel, enamel, hematite and rock crystal, their work sought to capture the essence of form and the dynamics of function - and in doing so, captured the essence of the Art Deco era, as well. Join jewelry historian Lisa Schoening in an exploration of the work of the French avante-garde jewelers.
Lisa Schoening teaches Gemology and The History of Jewelry at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) Los Angeles and does marketing for Jewelers Mutual.
